TOP 5 TIPS FOR A FITTER

AND HEALTHIER YOU...

#1 - FUEL YOUR BODY

As the saying goes, you are what you eat!

It's so important to fuel your body with wholesome and nourishing food from all of the food groups. This is essential to ensure you are getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need for your body to function effectively.

Avoid junk and processed foods that will just leave you feeling sluggish and most often hungry, sooner rather than later. Junk food really is just empty calories so make sure they don't form the basis of your everyday diet.

It's equally important to ensure you are eating enough food for your activity level. If you are a highly active person you will generally need to eat more calories for your body to operate effectively and fuel your workouts.

Feel you need to supplement vitamins in your diet? You can also take a multivitamin regularly to maintain a healthy immune system and support energy. Multivitamins also help to fill the vitamin and mineral gaps our diets leave. Probiotics are also great for encouraging good gut bacteria and an overall healthy digestive system. Make sure you take a probiotic regularly if you are taking antibiotics.

#2 - GET ACTIVE

Choose an active lifestyle and exercise regularly.

Exercise is so important for overall health especially our heart health, but did you know exercise can also have a positive impact on your mental state. It actually produces endorphins that can relieve pain and stress but also feel good brain chemicals including dopamine and serotonin that play a part in regulating your mood.

As an added bonus why not workout outdoors and get some fresh air - a great way to de-stress after a hard day at work. You don't always have to work out to an extreme intensity; even a brisk afternoon walk can have positive effects on your mood and health.

#3 - REHYDRATE

Our bodies are made up of more than 50% water.

Water is such an important nutrient as it's required for most body functions. Unfortunately the body cannot store water so it is very important that it is continually replaced, especially during times of high perspiration or water loss i.e. hot weather, exercise and even during activities such as flying. The average person needs 2L of water a day but the more active you are and the more you lose water through perspiration, the more water you need to replace.

Losing water also results in a loss of electrolytes which are also important for body function. A quick way to restore hydration and electrolytes in times of need or stress is with a hydration product like Hydralyte.  Choose an electrolyte and hydration replacement that's not full of sugar like some energy drinks can be.

#4 - RECOVER

Allowing your body to recover is crucial to allow your muscles time to repair, strengthen and rebuild. It also allows our bodies time to replenish energy stores and repair damaged tissues.

Have you ever felt that after a lousy night's sleep you seem to be craving junk food and are constantly hungry? Physical rest is important and getting enough quality shut eye can have a large impact on everyday health including cell repair, maintaining a healthy balance of the hormones that control hunger and an overall healthy immune system.

In addition to physical rest, protein is important for effective body function. It can also be useful in assisting with muscle repair and growth if you are working out. The main protein sources are lean meat, fish, eggs and Greek yoghurt. If you are constantly on the run and feel you are not meeting your daily protein requirements, a protein powder or shake might be a useful addition to your diet.

#5 - FIND BALANCE

Stick to a diet and exercise regime that suits you and your lifestyle, and is something that you can maintain long term. Make sure you make time to relax and de-stress and your body will thank you.

A work life balance is extremely important and so is having a day off your diet to enjoy an indulgent meal or have a drink (or two) every now and then.

Life is meant to be lived so enjoy every moment.
